Rumors came out that the Cavaliers were trading Andre Drummond. The center then sat out of their game Feb. 15 against the Warriors. Drummond went to the locker room mid game and returned wearing street clothes.
Drummond is averaging 17.5 points, 13.5 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game for the Cavs this season. The Cavs have decided to save his health and keep his trade value high by not playing him until the trade deadline on March 25.
At the end of the game, Warriors forward Draymond Green had quite a bit to say about the situation and how the NBA is treating their players.
“I’d like to talk about something that has been bothering me – it’s the treatment of players in this league,” Green said in a post-game interview. “To watch Andre Drummond before the game sit on the sideline and go to the back and come out in street clothes because the team is going to trade him is bullsh**.”
Cavs coach J.B. Bickerstaff was aware of the comments made by Green but did not say whether he disagreed or not. Bickerstaff said that nobody's (the teams) opinion should be muted. They are allowed to feel how they feel. "Obviously there's conversations that we've had with our guys as far as this process goes that everybody's not privy to. But again, guys have a right to speak their voice, and organizations have to do what's best for the organization. I think that's kind of how it works, and it shouldn't be a two-way street, so to speak.'' He said in a post-game interview.
If players are being traded, they should be the ones deciding if they will play or not. Some players are begging to leave, and would choose not to play but are forced to. There are also players that don't want to be traded and aren't allowed to play. This isn't fair to the players and it's a good thing Green called them out on this.
“When James Harden asks for a trade, and essentially dogged it, there’s no surprise there," Green said. "No one is going to fight back that James was dogging it his last days in Houston. But he was castrated for wanting to go to a different team and everybody destroyed that man. Yet, a team can come out and say, ‘We want to trade a guy.' Then that guy has to go sit and then if he doesn’t stay professional, then he’s a cancer and he’s not good in someone’s locker room. And he’s the issue.”
The NBA needs to reevaluate how they go about these trades and the decisions they make when benching and playing. The true business side of the NBA shows when the trades are involved.
